DESCRIPTION:Look at nature in a new way! Biological illustration consists of keen observation of the subject and recording what is observed\, while focusing on form and function.  Using approachable media such as graphite pencils\, blending stumps and a kneaded eraser\, students will have various opportunities to practice and sharpen their observation skills.  Instructor Wendy Chadbourne is a Certified Medical Illustrator and the founder of Inky Mouse studios\, a freelance illustration studio specializing in veterinary\, medical and scientific illustration. She has created illustrations for a wide range of clients including MRI clinicians\, veterinary surgeons\, scientific researchers and zoological facilities.  Participants of all levels are welcome and materials will be provided. \n$45 per person/$35 museum members \nREGISTER

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Melissa Renn will explore how the community\, environment\, and landscape of the outer Cape shaped the work of a diverse group of modern artists\, including Morris Davidson\, Stuart Davis\, Charles Demuth\, Helen Frankenthaler\, Marsden Hartley\, William H. Johnson\, George Grosz\, Hans Hofmann\, Lee Krasner\, Herman Maril\, George Morrison\, Robert Motherwell\, Saul Steinberg\, Hedda Sterne\, and Bob Thompson. Often characterized as the “Wild West of the East\,” Provincetown is much more than a summer retreat. It has been\, since the early twentieth century\, an international center for the avant-garde and a hub for a vast network of modernists working in a range of media\, from painting to printmaking to performance art.   \n  \nRenn\, the Collections Manager at Harvard Business School\, has written on American art from the 18th and 20th century with essays on the Provincetown art colony and American modern art.  \n$25 per person / $20 museum members  \nRegistration required  \nREGISTER \n

DESCRIPTION:Be the first to explore the new exhibit\, Look Up: Weathervanes of Cape Cod with Curator Annie Dean. Not a member? Join today! \nREGISTER \nLook Up! Weathervanes of Cape Cod & the Islands\, features 17 weathervanes on loan from Cape Cod museums and private collections.  The history of weathervanes in America dates back hundreds of years\, from farmers who carved simple wood forms\, to the advent of large manufacturing companies during the 19th century. The exhibition includes examples of both\, as well as a sampling of unusual Cape Cod weathervanes with interesting local stories. All were designed to help people gauge the wind direction and weather before modern meteorological advancements. \nNine of the weathervanes on view are from the collection of Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich\, MA. These include a copper grasshopper\, horse and sulky\, and leaping deer as well as two examples of wooden vanes by the renowned 20th century carver Anthony Elmer Crowell of East Harwich\, MA. \nRounding out the display are weathervanes from Martha’s Vineyard\, Nantucket\, Cotuit\, Barnstable\, and an unusual usual skeleton weathervane with an original drawing on loan from the Edward Gorey Museum in Yarmouth Port\, MA. \nThe exhibition also includes a step into the 21st century with an interactive artwork\, Be the Wind\, by artist Owen Lowery. In this work\, visitors are invited to interact with a large screen of colorful images and their gestures alter the movement and speed of the colors. \nAn ongoing “make a weathervane” children’s craft activity is also included.The exhibition is family-friendly with interpretive information available for both adults and children. The show is designed to inspire visitors to “Look Up!” after they leave the Museum and notice all the interesting and delightful artwork high above the usual sightline. A collection of pictures of weathervanes submitted by community members will be on view and weathervane pictures can be sent to a special email address\, weathervanes@cahoonmuseum.org. \n

SUMMARY:Pochoir (Handprint with stencils) Workshop with Carol Fitzsimonds 
DESCRIPTION:Pochoir is a stencil-based printing technique that was popular from the late 19th century through the 1930’s. In this workshop\, exhibiting artist Carol Fitzsimonds will share some of the history of this technique with a range of examples from historic to contemporary prints. She will then demonstrate making a stencil and printing with gouache. There will be several sets of stencils already cut for students to use to begin designing one or more original Pochoir prints\, and students will be able to make their own stencils as well.  Materials and museum admission are included in the cost\, and light refreshments will be served.  \n$70 per person / $55 per member \nREGISTER \n  \n
