SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Scrimshaw: The Whaler's Art
DESCRIPTION:Scrimshaw: The Whaler’s Art\nJune 29 – October 30\, 2022\nThis major exhibition presents the art and history of scrimshaw\, a nautical folk art form created by whalers during the international whaling trade of the 19th century. The surprising history of this unique art form is explained and brought to life through the stories of the makers and recipients of these intricately detailed keepsakes. A wide range of decorative and utilitarian objects evoke connections to historic life on Cape Cod\, Nantucket\, and New Bedford and show the ways that people from diverse backgrounds expressed artistic creativity. New perspectives on the whaler’s life include the astonishing stories of local Wampanoag whalers. \nThis exhibition includes over 200 important examples from The Deitrich American Foundation\, Heritage Museum and Gardens\, The Mariners’ Museum and Park\, Mystic Seaport Museum\, Nantucket Whaling Museum\, New Bedford Whaling Museum\, Peabody Essex Museum\, and private New England collections. \nScrimshaw: The Whaler’s Art is organized by the Cahoon Museum of American Art with Guest Curator\, Dr. Alan Granby and Dr. Sarah Johnson\, Executive Director of the Cahoon Museum of American Art. \nSponsored by: \nBilezikian Family Foundation \nDonald C. McGraw Foundation \nR. Dudley Harrington\, Jr. Foundation \n Jean and John Entwistle \nRosemary and Keith Rapp \n

DESCRIPTION:Meet artist Elizabeth Whyte Schulze who will discuss the influences of her recent travels to Morocco on her latest series of baskets.  Schulze was inspired by seeing the beautiful carpets in the markets of Morocco’s port cities and learning that they were woven by women artisans who were supporting their families and preserving weaving traditions. She also became fascinated by the Berber women of the Sahara who express their creativity by adorning their faces and hands with intricate tattoos. Schulze will discuss how she integrates inspirations from her lifelong travels around the world with her personal creative journey and commitment to women’s upliftment.  She will bring examples of her work\, explain her artistic process\, and offer a demonstration of how she achieves the colorful and dynamic qualities of her basketry designs.  A lifelong artist\, Schulze exhibits throughout the country\, holds degrees from Ohio Wesleyan University and Tufts University and is the recipient of a Fellowship from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Schulze has several of her latest Morocco inspired baskets on view in the Interwoven: Contemporary Basketry exhibition. \nThis program is held in conjunction with the Museum’s exhibition\, Interwoven: Contemporary Basketry\, and will be hosted by Education and Programs Manager Michael MacMahon.

DESCRIPTION:Meet artist Jeannet Leendertse who will discuss her artistic journey\, from the influences of her early childhood in the Netherlands\, through her career as an award winning book designer and fiber artist\, to her current work as a master basket maker. Leendertse uses an unusual construction material\, seaweed (Ascophyllum Nodosum) tightly sewn and coiled with linen thread\, to create large sculptural vessels. While summering in Maine over the past decade\, Leendertse became fascinated with the creative potential of the seaweed that covered the rocks along the shore.  What started as artistic experimentation with a new media\, has now become a singular artistic form as Leendertse meticulously transforms the seaweed into astonishing sculptural forms. Leendertse will discuss her artistic process\, bring samples of works in progress\, explain the challenges of working with a living art material\, and what she has learned about the importance of ecological conservation. \nThis program is held in conjunction with the Museum’s exhibition\, Interwoven: Contemporary Basketry\, and will be hosted by Education and Programs Manager Michael MacMahon.

DESCRIPTION:Art Talk: Artist’s Materials and their Meaning in the Paintings of Brenda Kingery and the Basket Makers of the Interwoven: Contemporary Basketry\n \nHistory and culture play an important role in the materials artists choose to create their artwork. In this talk\, Museum educator Michael McMahon will explore how an artist’s choice of a particular medium informs both the limitations and freedoms they have when creating a new artwork.  By looking at the traditional and the innovative materials used by painter Brenda Kingery and the artists of the Interwoven: Contemporary Basketry exhibition\, the talk will explore how available materials can inspire and constrain the artistic process and offer a glimpse into the creative origins of art as it relates to a place and its people.   Drawing upon his research and knowledge as an artist and educator\, Michael will offer a unique perspective on how these artists find their place within the expansive range of contemporary art being created today. \n

SUMMARY:Brenda Kingery: “Copper Treasure: A story of Remnants and Cultural Survival”
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Brenda Kingery as she speaks about her recent large-scale painting\, Copper Treasure\, inspired by her Chickasaw heritage and the indigenous women weavers of Okinawa and their experiences with preserving their traditional culture in post-war Japan. Okinawa had a strategic role in military expansionism in Asia and the Pacific for the US\, China\, and Japan. During the Battle of Okinawa in 1945\, women weavers and potters buried their treasures to hide and preserve them from the destruction of war. As the ground of Okinawa was hit with bombs\, precious buried textiles exploded into pieces. Kingery considers these remnants as a metaphor of the impact of occupation and how survivors\, including women and children\, piece their culture back together from broken fragments. Kingery draws a connection to her Chickasaw heritage\, as her ancestors buried cultural treasures in large earth-made mounds in their homeland of Tupelo\, Mississippi. \nKingery received her master’s degree in fine arts and art history from the University of Oklahoma and completed post-graduate studies in fine arts from Ryukyuus Daigaku University in Okinawa\, Japan. She returned to Oklahoma to teach painting and drawing\, later teaching art history for the San Antonio College. In 2007\, she was appointed by the US President to the Institute of American Indian Arts’ (IAIA) Board of Trustees. \n$10 / Free for members\, registration required \nRegister
