SUMMARY:Material Considerations in Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:Join Cahoon Museum Education and Programs Manager\, Michael MacMahon for a live Zoom conversation with contemporary artists Cicely Carew\, Juan Escobedo and Loretta Park. In this engaging presentation\, the artists will share insights into their creative practices and how they choose and combine materials for their work. The discussion will include how these choices can question notions of authorship and originality and have been important to challenging traditional concepts of art. \nOnce registered you will receive an email providing the Zoom link: \nRegister\n\nRead more \nCicely Carew:\nBoston-based artist Cicely Carew uses vibrant color\, rebellious mark-making\, sweeping gestures\, and references to the natural and galactic world in her artwork. Her life as a mother\, movement instructor\, and nature enthusiast heavily influence her practice. \nCarew received her MFA from Lesley University’s College of Art + Design in 2020. Carew’s work is included in the permanent collections of Northeastern University\, Simmons University\, Boston Art Inc.\, the Cambridge Arts Council\, and Fidelity Investments. Her work was recently featured in the Newport Art Museum’s 2020-21 exhibition “Call & Response” and at the Prudential Center in collaboration with Now + There. She currently resides in Cambridge\, Massachusetts with her son. \ncicelycarew.com \nJuan Escobedo:\nJuan C. Escobedo (b.1985\, El Paso\, Texas) explores personal identity in his art installations\, sculpture\, and collages. Escobedo primarily creates his art out of cardboard\, and he associates this material with his background as a brown\, Mexican-American queer male\, raised in a low-socioeconomic community along the US/Mexico border. He choses this material as a way to challenge viewers about socioeconomic and racial prejudices and raise awareness about preconceived notions of race and class. \njce-art.com \nLoretta Park:\nLoretta Park is a visual artist and holds an MFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and a BA from Bowdoin College. Her work has been exhibited at Shelter In Place Gallery\, Boston\, MA (2020); New System Exhibitions\, Portland\, ME (2019); Ray Gallery\, Brooklyn (2018)\, Society of Arts and Crafts\, Boston\, MA (2017); and Center for Maine Contemporary Art\, Rockland\, ME (2017). SUMMARY:Gallery Talk & Demonstration with Craig Murphy “Through the Lens of the Past: Capturing Contemporary Subjects using 19th Century Photographic Processes”
DESCRIPTION:Upstate New York photographer Craig Murphy brings his traveling tintype studio to the Cahoon Museum for a lecture and a live demonstration of this historic photographic process. Murphy will discuss the early history of photography\, how this seemingly magical process spurred the imagination of artists and engineers\, and share his first-hand knowledge learned from using historical methods to capture images. He will do a live demonstration of how a tintype was created from exposure to development exactly as it would have happened in the 1860s. \nMurphy specializes in 19th century photographic processes including tintypes\, ambrotypes\, and the wet plate collodion process. He travels with his mobile tintype studio making portrait and scenic images\, including landscapes in the Hudson Valley and Adirondacks. \nFree with museum admission\, members free\, please pre-register: \nRegister Now
