Meet artists Julie Child and Donald Saaf to learn about the techniques and inspiration behind their work\, and try your hand at making a fall collage using paper and fabric inspired by the art of Donald Saaf in a workshop led by artist Leslie Goldman.  Saaf will also be on hand for a musical performance from 11:00am-12:00pm. \nAlso\, interactive drawing and painting stations will be setup at the ArtCart for visitors to create their own illustrations\,  light refreshments\,  and music will round out the day! \nAll are welcome. No admission will be charged. \nThe museum is fully accessible. Please call for more information. \nFamily Programs: 10:00am-12:00pm\nDonald Saaf Musical Performance: 11:00am -12:00pm\nArtist reception: 1:00-3:00pm \nSponsored by the Massachusetts Cultural Council \n  \nREGISTER \nArtist Julie Child has spent a lifetime documenting marine animals for scientists at the Marine Biological Laboratory\, creating horticultural illustrations for gardening books\, teaching\, and collecting biological specimens of interest.  This exhibition includes her drawings\, illustrated books\, samples from her extensive entomological collection (all from Cape Cod)\, children’s book illustrations\, and the work of her adult students. \nDeeply interested in “memory of place and experience\,” Donald Saaf draws upon a lifetime of keen observation as he captures moments when external and internal worlds overlap. Saaf explores the subtle line between fine art and folk art in paintings that are heartwarming and approachable. A graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston Saaf has been exhibiting nationally for twenty-five years\, is the author of numerous award-winning children’s books\, and performs on a variety of instruments with the Little Hope String Band.

SUMMARY:Artist Gallery Talk with Jodi Colella
DESCRIPTION:Meet fiber artist Jodi Colella whose work is on view in the Look This Way show. Jodi is fascinated by early photography and collects antique tintype portraits which she manipulates to create evocative artworks with dark humor and surrealist imagery. Her new series\, Ghost Stories\, is inspired by the uneasy postures and expressions evident in daguerreotype portraits\, whose subjects were required to sit without moving for many minutes before their image could be captured. For Colella\, these minutes also expose a sliver of the soul that she contemplates and then seeks to reveal and investigate. \nJodi will explain how she utilizes traditional needle arts paired with provocative materials to create both intimate and monumental sculptures that engage the viewer while eliciting the simultaneous reactions of whimsy and threat. She’ll bring samples of the materials she uses to create these enlarged tintypes and explain her innovative technique. This  new work on view was  inspired by the Museum’s current daguerreotype exhibition. \nJodi Colella works out of her studio in Somerville\, MA\, and exhibits and teaches internationally. She is a member of the Boston Sculptors Gallery and a recipient of a 2019 Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship Award for Sculpture. \nJoin us at the Museum to hear Jodi’s talk\, then see the new exhibitions and stay to enjoy opening reception!

SUMMARY:Artist Gallery Talk with Sandi Blanda
DESCRIPTION:From her first show in New York City in 1984\, to a solo exhibition at the Cahoon Museum in 2000\, through her current pieces\, Sandi’s work has been distinctly her own. Her artistic style is characterized by an abundant use of flowers and a lacy technique\, with no two valentines the same. Among other innovations\, Sandi expanded the standard traditional sailors valentine mottos\, with new unconventional messages such as Love Me Tender\, Dare to Dream\, and Beneath the Surface Lies Our Future. \nAs one of a select group of very experienced sailors valentines artists that teaches the craft\, Sandi says\, “If my work enriches the lives of others\, I am flattered. If my work transports people to our country’s rich maritime past\, that’s even better. But sharing my work by teaching others is by far the greatest joy my work provides.” \nFree with paid museum admission\, members free; please pre-register\, registration includes admission to the museum.
