SUMMARY:REGISTRATION CLOSED - The Endurance of Wampum with Paula Peters - a Virtual Lecture
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED FOR THIS VIRTUAL EVENT \nWampum belts are of cultural\, sacred\, and symbolic significance to the Wampanoag nation. Paula will discuss how the search for the lost treasurers of Metacom following the King Philip’s war in 1676 led to the revival of traditional art of wampum belt and connections it made to history and culture. The search for Metacom’s belt continues today. \nFree virtual program. \n  \nPaula Peters is the founder of the Native American creative agency SmokeSygnals; an independent scholar; and a politically\, socially\, and culturally active member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. As an independent scholar and writer of Native\, and particularly Wampanoag history\, she is a producer of the traveling exhibit “Our” Story: 400 Years of Wampanoag History and is currently engaged in the Wampum Belt Project in search of the lost treasures of Metacom\, including an effort to restore the art and tradition of wampum making among her people. She is the executive producer of the 2016 documentary film Mashpee Nine and author of the companion book. She lives with her extended family in Mashpee and travels internationally to speak and educate on the true Wampanoag story. A graduate of Bridgewater State College she was formerly a writer at the Cape Cod Times where she won numerous national awards for her journalism.

SUMMARY:Member's Walk-Through with Artist Robin Tost
DESCRIPTION:Be one of the first people to see Robin Tost’s incredible new show\, Robin Tost: Scrap Metal Quilts and meet the artist. \nSculptor Robin Tost creates colorful\, whimsical ‘full metal quilts’ out of recycled automobile parts and cast off metal.  The idea for her signature style began during a biking trip across Vermont through a region devastated by factory closings.  She noticed women selling quilts to supplement their family income and was inspired to create sculpture transforming old\, hard recycled metal (a ‘man’s material’) into a form associated with women’s fiber work.  Inspired by traditional quilt patterns\, Tost cuts the metal\, punches it with a drill press\, and sews the pieces together with wire. The exhibition includes a dozen of her metal quilts as well as her large scale animal sculptures\, Spirit Bear and Phoenix. \nThis is a member’s only event – not a member? Join here. \nFree to all members of the museum. \nRegister
