SUMMARY:Artist Gallery Talk with Sandi Blanda
DESCRIPTION:From her first show in New York City in 1984\, to a solo exhibition at the Cahoon Museum in 2000\, through her current pieces\, Sandi’s work has been distinctly her own. Her artistic style is characterized by an abundant use of flowers and a lacy technique\, with no two valentines the same. Among other innovations\, Sandi expanded the standard traditional sailors valentine mottos\, with new unconventional messages such as Love Me Tender\, Dare to Dream\, and Beneath the Surface Lies Our Future. \nAs one of a select group of very experienced sailors valentines artists that teaches the craft\, Sandi says\, “If my work enriches the lives of others\, I am flattered. If my work transports people to our country’s rich maritime past\, that’s even better. But sharing my work by teaching others is by far the greatest joy my work provides.” \nFree with paid museum admission\, members free; please pre-register\, registration includes admission to the museum.

Join John Whitenight\, author of Under Glass a Victorian Obsession\, to explore the fascinating world of shell grottos\, shell houses and follies\, sailor valentines\, and extraordinary shell art found under antique glass domes in an illustrated lecture. \nJohn Whitenight\, while always a passionate collector of Victoriana\, began collecting glass domes in 1973. He has been researching the “why and wherefore of these lovely domed items” ever since and has authored the book Under Glass: A Victorian Obsession.
