SUMMARY:Gallery Talk with Artist Soo Sunny Park
DESCRIPTION:Soo Sunny Park creates captivating sculptural art installations that have become renown in the fields of art and design. For artworks such as Boundary Conditions\, she creates a large metal armature using cut and welded chain link fence and weaves iridescent Plexiglas into this metal grid to capture the ephemeral qualities of light; the result is a powerful immersive art experience. Park explains her artistic process\, from idea to construction and installation\, in an illustrated presentation using impressive examples of her installation work. \nPark shares the journey of her career in art from her undergraduate studies at Columbus College of Art and Design\, where she planned to pursue product design\, to examples of her sculptures and art installations that have been featured at the North Carolina Museum of Art\, the Currier Museum\, DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum and other national and international venues. Park has an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and teaches studio art at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. \nFree with museum admission; members free; please pre-register: \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk & Demonstration with Craig Murphy “Through the Lens of the Past: Capturing Contemporary Subjects using 19th Century Photographic Processes”
DESCRIPTION:Upstate New York photographer Craig Murphy brings his traveling tintype studio to the Cahoon Museum for a lecture and a live demonstration of this historic photographic process. Murphy will discuss the early history of photography\, how this seemingly magical process spurred the imagination of artists and engineers\, and share his first-hand knowledge learned from using historical methods to capture images. He will do a live demonstration of how a tintype was created from exposure to development exactly as it would have happened in the 1860s. \nMurphy specializes in 19th century photographic processes including tintypes\, ambrotypes\, and the wet plate collodion process. He travels with his mobile tintype studio making portrait and scenic images\, including landscapes in the Hudson Valley and Adirondacks. \nFree with museum admission\, members free\, please pre-register: \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Fall Art Exhibitions Opening Reception

Be the first to see the new shows\, enjoy lively conversation\, a wine reception and a great time! Through the Looking Glass presents a comprehensive survey of over 100 daguerreotypes\, a fascinating method of photography developed in the 19th century\, from the holdings of preeminent collectors Michael Mattis and Judith Hochberg. Look This Way presents provocative new work by three regional women artists that challenges the foundations of how we view the world\, record memories and people\, and represent those who remain unknown. The exhibition is a direct counterpoint to the daguerreotype show\, which inspired much of the artwork on view. \nAdmission Free

SUMMARY:Artist Gallery Talk with Jodi Colella
DESCRIPTION:Meet fiber artist Jodi Colella whose work is on view in the Look This Way show. Jodi is fascinated by early photography and collects antique tintype portraits which she manipulates to create evocative artworks with dark humor and surrealist imagery. Her new series\, Ghost Stories\, is inspired by the uneasy postures and expressions evident in daguerreotype portraits\, whose subjects were required to sit without moving for many minutes before their image could be captured. For Colella\, these minutes also expose a sliver of the soul that she contemplates and then seeks to reveal and investigate. \nJodi will explain how she utilizes traditional needle arts paired with provocative materials to create both intimate and monumental sculptures that engage the viewer while eliciting the simultaneous reactions of whimsy and threat. She’ll bring samples of the materials she uses to create these enlarged tintypes and explain her innovative technique. This  new work on view was  inspired by the Museum’s current daguerreotype exhibition. \nJodi Colella works out of her studio in Somerville\, MA\, and exhibits and teaches internationally. She is a member of the Boston Sculptors Gallery and a recipient of a 2019 Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship Award for Sculpture. \nJoin us at the Museum to hear Jodi’s talk\, then see the new exhibitions and stay to enjoy opening reception!
