Dear Friends and Members,

The 2025 season at the Cahoon Museum of American Art was a year defined by positive change, meaningful growth, and, above all, extraordinary art. It has been a time of reflection and forward momentum, one that has strengthened our connection to the community while expanding the ways we engage with artistic expression.

A particularly meaningful moment last year was honoring the legacy of longtime donor and former board member Gretchen Reilly. Celebrating her life and contributions reminded us of the profound impact one individual can have on a cultural institution and the community it serves. Her generosity and belief in the museum continue to inspire our work and our vision for the future.

This season’s exhibitions added depth, beauty, and thought-provoking dialogue to our galleries. Still Life Stories: Beauty, Bounty, and Reflection encouraged visitors to rethink the still life tradition, showing it as much more than static imagery; it became a perspective through which themes of abundance, impermanence, and personal story could be explored. Conversely, Duke Riley: What the Waves May Bring provided a lively and immersive experience, linking art, history, and the natural world through works that explore humanity’s changing relationship with the sea. Together, these exhibitions demonstrated the diversity and richness of artistic storytelling we aim to showcase.

While exhibitions are at the heart of what we do, what we are most proud of is our ability to serve the community and connect audiences with art in meaningful and lasting ways. Last year, our staff demonstrated remarkable creativity and dedication by introducing new opportunities for visitors to engage directly with the artistic process. These interactive experiences break down barriers, invite participation, and ensure that art is not only seen, but felt and experienced.

I am especially grateful for the extraordinary efforts of our team in bringing signature events to life, including Cahoon in Bloom, the Great Brush Off Art Auction, and the Mermaid Festival. Each of these moments required tremendous collaboration, imagination, and care, and each played an important role in welcoming new audiences while deepening relationships with those who know us well.

As I reflect on my time as Interim Director, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our members and

friends. Your support, encouragement, and belief in the museum have been invaluable during this period of transition. You have helped sustain not only our operations, but also our spirit and sense of purpose.

Looking ahead, I am filled with optimism. The Cahoon Museum is poised for an exciting future. One that builds on last year’s momentum with a bold and evolving vision. We will continue to honor our history while embracing new ideas, new voices, and new ways of connecting art and community.

Thank you for being part of this journey.

With gratitude,

Cristoff Shay
Deputy Director

Cahoon Museum Anchors: A Legacy of Support

In 2006, Founders Keith and Rosemary Rapp donated the historic Crocker home and surrounding land to the Cahoon Museum of American Art so that the Museum would always have a permanent home. The Cahoon Museum Anchors recognize this transformational gift and honor those who have made bequests, included the Cahoon Museum in their estate plans, or made deferred gifts to benefit the Museum into the future.

“As a Cahoon Museum volunteer and board member, I see first-hand the important work being done here to support local and regional artists, and it’s inspiring. The innovative exhibits and educational programs are an asset to Cape Cod,” said Jean Entwistle, a volunteer at the Cahoon Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and at the Asia Society in New York City.

The Museum is vibrant and growing, and that comes with a cost. Being part of the Anchors program and knowing that I make a difference is important to me. The Museum has brought me joy, and I can help that wonderful spark continue.”
