Dr. Melissa Renn will explore how the community, environment, and landscape of the outer Cape shaped the work of a diverse group of modern artists, including Morris Davidson, Stuart Davis, Charles Demuth, Helen Frankenthaler, Marsden Hartley, William H. Johnson, George Grosz, Hans Hofmann, Lee Krasner, Herman Maril, George Morrison, Robert Motherwell, Saul Steinberg, Hedda Sterne, and Bob Thompson. Often characterized as the “Wild West of the East,” Provincetown is much more than a summer retreat. It has been, since the early twentieth century, an international center for the avant-garde and a hub for a vast network of modernists working in a range of media, from painting to printmaking to performance art.

Renn, the Collections Manager at Harvard Business School, has written on American art from the 18th and 20th century with essays on the Provincetown art colony and American modern art.
