My Picture Book

Salley made this book in third grade at the Woods Hole School. She remembers feeling that her artwork wasn’t finished until something real was glued or stapled to the paper.

Art School

Insects

These insects were characters in a story, The Great Cleanup, that Salley illustrated for an educational reader in 1979 about a community of ecologically minded insects who organized a recycling effort to reuse the trash that was dumped on their neighborhood.

Modular Village

Salley made this village for a toy class at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1977. The 3-inch squares are designed to be set up in different arrangements.

Pins

Salley made and sold a line of pins starting when she was in art school. She would sit and work on them during class critiques.

Fairy Houses

Lichen Lookout

This structure was part of a fairy house exhibit at Highfield Hall & Gardens in Falmouth in 2013, which Salley Mavor organized. Using a combination of plywood, wire and objects from nature, she built the house in her studio and moved it on site, where it withstood the weather, perched in a beech tree.

Grate Hall

The frame of this fairy house is made with several vintage cheese graters, which Salley salvaged from a box of kitchen supplies. The crocheted glove was found in her grandmother’s collection of lacey things. This fairy house was part of the 2015 fairy house exhibit at Highfield Hall & Gardens in Falmouth.
