permanent collection, 2018.8

Artist Hilary Hutchison’s dramatic swimming fish sculpture celebrates the importance of the Atlantic Codfish to the history, economy, and ecology of New England.

This two-part head and tail sculpture marks the first artwork in the Streetside series, which brings art beyond the museum walls into the community for all to enjoy. It is dedicated by Jane and Steve Akin to museum director, Sarah Johnson, in commemoration for launching this new public art initiative and is sited by the Cahoon Museum’s west entrance.

Hilary Hutchison was selected as the first Streetside artist. Hutchison teaches visual arts at the Episcopal Academy in Pennsylvania and summers in Cotuit. She previously served on the faculty of the Boston University School of Fine Arts, where she received her BFA and MFA in sculpture. Her work was included in the Cahoon Museum’s 2018 exhibition, The Pollinators.
